1. Tell me (and the readers) a little bit about yourself, including a quirk that you have.
A. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana where I am an administrator at an elementary school here in the city. Before I started fiction writing, I was a journalist and blog writer, and I have a few book chapters and journal articles published in academic works.
2. How did the idea for your book come about?
A. Honestly, it’s not very romantic, but I was reading up on ways I could personally develop into a better person, and I kept reading how creative types need to push themselves from just creating content and need to add structure to it. So, rather than just writing random scenes or worldbuilding, or creating characters, I decided to pull it all into an actual novel.
3. What was the most enjoyable and stressful part about writing this book?
A. The most enjoyable part was just doing things my way. I didn’t really know much about the indie publishing community until after I had already published the book, so I didn’t feel lots of pressure to do things a particular way. That being said, one of the most stressful parts of working on The Awakening was realizing I had done a lot of stuff wrong and rushing back to fix it.
4. Who was the first person you asked to read your book after it was ready and why them?
A. My patrons! I have a Patreon (www.patreon.com/codyblakewilson), and my awesome and loyal supporters there were the first people I wanted to read the book. I wanted to show them how their support is helping me create.
5. Are you planning to release another book anytime soon?
A. Yes. I have a short story that will be published by the end of this month, and I’m hoping to drop my second novel between November and February.
6. If you could venture into a different genre, which would you choose to write on?
A. My novels up to this point have all been urban fantasy, but some of my short stories are more fictional social commentary, and I think it would be fun to do a whole novel in that genre.
7. Did you always know you wanted to be a published author/poet?
A. Kind of, yes! I never actually thought I would do it, but I always dreamed of actually writing and publishing books.
8. Did you look up to any author or poet while growing up?
A. C.S. Lewis is one of my biggest inspirations. I am particularly enamored by his ability to weave these fantastical stories with deep metaphors and meanings behind every little detail.
9. I’ve always talked about this, but if your book was made into a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?
A. I love this question. Henry would be played by Joe Alwyn because of his performances in Mary Queen of Scotts and The Favourite. Tony would be played by Adam DiMarco. Milton would be played by Jake T. Austin. I would want Kylie played by Indya Moore, because I think it’s important that trans women are prioritized to play trans women in film. And last, this is super sad, but I had always imagined Naya Rivera playing Tamra. Honestly, a lot of Tamra’s personality was inspired by Naya’s character on Glee, who was my favorite character on the show. Sending lots of love to her family right now.
10. Lastly, do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring writers out there?
A. I would say… do your research so that you can make the best decision for you, but don’t feel beholden to what you find. There’s no exactly right or wrong way to be an independent writer/author. Be informed and learned, but then do it in the way that makes you happiest.
